Edit Canon C300 Mark II 4K MXF in FCP X with ProRes Codecs

The Canon C300 Mark II is released as a new 4K Digital Cinema camera. It's new range of XF-AVC H.264 codecs uses the MXF wrapper and is designed to be compatible with industry standard Non-linear Edit systems, makes integrating both 4K and 2K/Full HD footage into workflows effortlessly, while maintain the highest image quality.

If you recorded some 4K MXF videos with your Canon C300 Mark II 4K camcorder, you may prefer to edit them on FCP X before sharing with friends or uploading to YouTube.

Final Cut Pro uses QuickTime technology, which means you can import and export almost any almost any QuickTime-compatible file format or import the above mentioned file formats. Though Canon C300 Mark II camcorder can help you to record high quality 4K MXF footages, but usually it can make video editing a real nightmare. In order to edit Canon C300 Mark II 4K MXF in FCP X you need to transcode your footage to Apple Prores codec since the AVC-Intra codec does not support encoding.

Step 1. Add Canon C300 Mark II 4K MXF files

Just click “Add File” button to find the Canon C300 Mark II 4K MXF files that you want to import to FCP X and edit it. • Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy) – SD levels – 480i/p and 576i/p. Used in offline workflows.
• Apple ProRes 4444 – Edit and finish 4:4:4 material.

TipYou can click “settings” to adjust the output parameters, like resolution, bitrate, etc. Don’t forget the balance between video quality and size.

Notes

1.When converting video to Final Cut Pro oriented format templates(e.g. Apple Prores), please ensure that your computer has Final Cut Pro X installed, otherwise the converted files will have audio only without image.

2.If you are using FCP X, please make sure you have installed ProApps QuickTime Codecs , or you may get files with sound only without video.

Step 3. Start conversion

Click the “Convert” button to start converting Canon C300 Mark II 4K MXF files to FCP X. After that, click the “Open” button to locate the output files and transfer the files to FCP X as usual.

Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letter boxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)

Resolution: You can choose different resolutions, all the way to 5K. The lowest resolution supported is 640 x 480. You cannot choose custom resolutions or aspect ratios. This is a huge negative.

Frame Rate: The lowest frame rate possible is 23.976p, and the maximum is 60p. No 12 or 18 fps options.

Audio Settings: Generally, audio only has ‘Surround’ or ‘Stereo’, and the maximum audio bit depth isn’t specified. Sequenced audio is always mixed using 32-bit floating-point values.
